A recent study showed that electricity produces electricity in ultric iron layers when salted water flows. This effect can be used as a new method of production of electricity in an already existing infrastructure or to develop new solutions.

The phenomenon opened by researchers from the California Institute of Technology and the North-West University is not related to chemical reactions, but is based on the conversion of kinetic energy flowing salted water into electricity. Since it is quite difficult to produce a sufficient amount of two-dimensional material for use on an industrial scale, then scientists began to study more affordable alternatives. As a result, they found that iron oxide films are also suitable, while it is easier to create and scaling.

Although the rust appears on the iron alloys itself, but to obtain a solid layer on a thin sheet of metal, the team used physical precipitation from the steam phase. This method provides for the conversion of solid materials into pairs, which condenses on the desired surface. As a result, they created a layer of iron oxide with a thickness of 10 nm, which is about 10 thousand times thinner of the human hair.

When they took the iron sheet coated with rust, and merged with solutions of salt water with different concentrations, they found that several dozen malelvolt and several microampers per CM2 were generated in it. When using a sheet of 10 m2, it will be able to produce several kilowatt energy per hour, which is enough to provide 1-2 ordinary apartments.

The mechanism for generating electricity through an electrokinetic effect is complicated and includes ion adsorption and desorption. But, in fact, it works as follows: ions present in salt water attract electrons in the gland under the rust layer. Ions in water move along with it and due to the strength of attraction they are pulled by electrons in the hardware, generating an electric current.

Researchers say that this phenomenon can be effectively used in places where there are moving saline solutions. Options include the use of tide energy, or a system of passive conversion of wave energy on buoy or other objects in the sea or ocean. They even consider the possibility of using the movement of salt water in the human veins to power the implants.
